What did we do last summer? What didn’t we do? In July Arlene Martinez Vickers and Devon Little co-faciliated Y-WE Speak, a week long theater based leadership camp at the Seattle Repertory Theater. Participants explored their voices and found strength through telling their own stories. The week culminated in an original performance met by a standing ovation.
In August Y-WE Program Manager, Reagan Jackson and Shae Savoy faciliated Y-WE Write, a week long writing camp set at the picturesque Whidbey Institute. They were joined by award winning Hedgebrook teaching artists, Grace Love, Karen Finneyfrock, Anastacia Renee Tolbert, and Shontina Vernon who lead workshops in songwriting, poetry, fiction, and narrative writing.
Participants were invited to visit Hedgebrook and meet the current authors in residence, one of which included Pulitzer Prize winning Annette Gordon-Reed. Nancy Nordoff, the founder of the esteemed writer’s residency, greeted the youth and talked to them about why she created a refuge for women writers. The camp culminated with an incredible open mic night.
